Urinalysis and Fecal Exam

Westwood Veterinary Hospital offers in-house urinalysis as well as fecal (stool) examinations. Your veterinarian will recommend a urinalysis to help in diagnosing certain conditions such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones, kidney function, toxicities, and glucose in the urine due to diabetes. Fecals are also recommended to detect parasitic infections as well as viral or bacterial infections.

Why are canine fecal examinations recommended yearly?

Fecals allow veterinarians to check your pet for intestinal parasites, useful and harmful bacteria. Intestinal parasites are a major cause of morbidity in pets and also a concern for people.

If my dog’s urine test reveals a urinary tract infection, what can I do?

If your dog has been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI), your veterinarian may recommend urine culture and sensitivity testing and a treatment plan to alleviate symptoms and the cause of the infection (usually antibiotics and pain/anti-inflammatories remedies).
